Water aerobics offer fun fitness in Plainfield

“I used to be on medication for high blood pressure, but I don’t have to take that any longer,” Dugas said. “I have arthritis in my knees, but the water exercises have helped to reduce the pain from that.”

Dugas is one of about 20 women, ranging in age from 40 to 75, who participate in the thrice-weekly, hourlong high cardio class taught by Linda Lewis, of Central Village. It is one of a variety of water exercise classes, including stretch-and-tone, water walking and water yoga classes, offered in 12-week segments by the Plainfield Recreation Department, according to Recreation Director Myra Ambrogi.

“During any 12-week session, more than 100 people are participating in classes that are taught by certified instructors,” Ambrogi said.

Lewis said the high cardio class combines a shallow-water workout with exercises conducted in the deep end of the pool.

“We also mix in some kickboxing and an occasional water polo game to bring variety and enthusiasm to the class,” Lewis said.
